About Me
Greetings friends and welcome to TheShastaFlyBlog!
I’m Brian Bommarito, a full-time, professional guide for The Fly Shop in Redding, CA. Fishing, guiding and working on new fly patterns is about all I do these days. I’ve been fishing most of the waters around Mt Shasta since the 90′s and guiding my guests to the finest fly fishing northern California has to offer since 2005.
I tied my first flies at 14 and learned to fly fish on the fabled rivers of northern Michigan like the Au Gres, Betsie, Manistee and Au Sable. Fast forward a bit…and a 20+ year Navy career allowed me to fish for numerous exotic species all over the globe. (ask me about a 62 bonefish day in Diego Garcia!) After all the globetrotting, we’re officially tired of moving so my family and I have finally decided to settle down and call Redding “home”.
I love to teach and I’m proud to say that I’m an FFF Certified Casting Instructor (CCI) who welcomes beginners and I do my best to tailor an instructional and productive day for all my guests no matter their skill level. When not guiding, you’ll likely find me tying some goofy, new, can’t-miss fly pattern or hiking well out of cell range into the Pit river canyon.
My business is guiding (so yes, there will be a bit of self-serving spam here)but, this blog is just as much about the love of the sport. I hope to focus many future posts on our pursuit of the wild trout and steelhead of northern California, the places they take us, the tactics, casting, conservation, fly tying and the ever-popular ‘more’.
Please stay in touch by bookmarking an easy RSS feed (what’s an RSS feed?) or maybe signing up for the email quarterly Newsletter. Both are available in the sidebar, upper right.
However you stay in touch, please do so often and feel free to comment on any item/post you see. Your suggestions are always welcome!

Brian; Great to hear from you! I love you’re new web site. Thanks again for a great fishin’ trip on the Sac. last January. Next year I’ll try not to try to roll cast with all that heavy triple rigg. 50 Bow Hunks in two great days with the only small guy at 17″. I just took the Sage FXI 9’6″ 6wt. out on the Santa Margarita Lake to land a couple Large Mouth Bass. Thanks again See Ya Bomb
